We have much more in common than we thought

From August 31 to September 10, ten young farmers from Brazil, together with young German professionals, visited farms, companies, and institutions in Germany. The focus was on innovation, sustainability, and the future of agriculture and the agribusiness sector.

The trip demonstrated that, despite differing production conditions, both countries face similar challenges. Only by understanding the conditions of agriculture in Brazil and Europe can differences be overcome and viable solutions developed for both sides.

This is particularly true when different interests and perspectives clash, as is currently the case in the debate over EU import bans on Brazilian meat. Common rules and standards must be adhered to. At the same time, pragmatic solutions are needed that maintain trust and ensure that the economic benefits of the EU-Mercosur Agreement are truly felt by all partners.

The “Young Farmers’ Exchange Program” is supported by the German-Brazilian Initiative for Cooperation in Agribusiness and Innovation—with the goal of engaging the next generation in bilateral cooperation. Project partners include the Brazilian Agribusiness Association (ABAG) and the LADW, with support from the agriculture ministries of both countries. The fact that the project could be launched within just a few months is largely thanks to Bayer AG, which is funding the first exchange. The Andreas Hermes Academy (AHA) was tasked to organizing the program in Germany.

In the spring of 2027, the young German farmers will travel to Brazil for a return visit.
